While it is important to stay home and practice social distancing during this time, we can still try to have fun and get some fresh air outside in the backyard, or even around the house.
It is always nice when children can learn in different environments. Not only does it give their brain a break, but it's also a nice movement break for their bodies. This will help them feel more refreshed and ready to get back into learning!
Literacy Break Ideas
With ideas taken from SD38.
Alphabet Hunt: children find letters (i.e. on street signs, license plates, storefronts, etc.) alphabetically
Alphabet Chain: have children identify things that they see in alphabetical order (e.g. ant, bottle, car, door, etc.)
Alphabet Spot It: choose a letter from the alphabet and see how many things you can point out that starts with that letter (e.g. ant, apple, alley, arrow, etc.)
Eye Spy: "I spy with my little eyes, something that is _________"
Crambo: Eye Spy, but with a twist - the clue you give has to rhyme with the object (e.g. instead of saying 'blue house,' it's now 'clue mouse')
Going on a Picnic: determine a pattern without telling the children, then they have to guess what items they can bring while trying to figure out the pattern (e.g. listing 2 items in alphabetical order, 1 big and 1 small item, etc.)
Word Train: you name one item and the next person has to name an item that starts with the same ending sound/letter of your word (e.g. apple, elephant, teacher, rabbit, etc.)
Numeracy Break Ideas
Number Hunt: children find numbers (i.e. on street signs, license plates, storefronts, etc.)
Number Chain: have children identify things that they see in numerical order (e.g. 1 car, 2 signs, 3 rocks, etc.)
Number Find It: choose a number and see how many things you can find that is that number
