Daily Edit
Directions
Download these two documents: Week 5 Thursday Passage A & B (Teacher-Parent Copy) and Week 5 Thursday Passage B (Student Worksheet).
Give Passage B to your child.
Read Passage A aloud to your child (do not let them see it) while they follow along with Passage B.
Read Passage B aloud to your child (have them follow with their finger, if needed).
Read Passage A aloud to your child again while your child follows Passage B.
Give your child time to edit Passage B with a pencil or a marker. * Note: If you are unable to print this out, you child can orally edit the passage instead.
Review their edits and provide hints to help them finish it (e.g. What needs to be capitalized? What is at the end of a sentence? The vowel is saying its name, which means that there is a silent _?_ at the end of the word).
Show your child Passage A and have them compare to see how they did.
5-Minute Brain Break
Don't forget to take breaks in between work! It is important to get a breather while learning so our brain can continue to learn hard things for us.
Please refer to my 5-Minute Brain Break Ideas blog post if you are stuck on what to do.
Creative Writing
For Creative Writing, it is broken down into two parts and to be completed over the span of two days - Thursday and Friday. Your child should work on Part 1 today, then Part 2 tomorrow. It should take around 20 - 30 minutes in total to complete (10 - 15 minutes on Thursday and 10 - 15 minutes on Friday). I will try to give at least two options for Creative Writing. Your child can choose either - or both! - options.
Option 1
Go on a Nature Walk with an adult.
Part 1: Go on a Nature Walk and record what you see.
Part 2: Make a scavenger hunt list with the things you saw on your walk.
Tips:
Bring a notebook or a clipboard with paper and a pencil to help you record what you see on your walk.
Make sure to practice safe distancing while you're outside and wash your hands as soon as you get home.
Make sure you are with an adult at all times!
Adaptation: Use Google Earth or Google Maps street view if you are unable to go outside.
Adaptation: Take pictures of what you see.
Option 2
Create a board game using different places in nature.
Part 1: Create your board game.
Part 2: Create rules for your board game and play it.
Tips:
Ideas for different places in nature: lakes, mountains, rivers, playground, parks, meadows
You can create the board game on a piece of paper or cardboard
You can use board games you've played before for ideas (e.g. Monopoly, Snakes and Ladders, LIFE, etc.)
Create your own player pieces - what will you use?
Adaptation: Have a family member help you make the board game.
Extension: Make different "Wild Cards" and add it to your board game (e.g. "Bees are flying after you, run forward 3 steps.").
