Creative Writing Part 1 (10~15 minutes)
Daily Edit
We will continue to learn about Adjectives. Please refer to yesterday's blog post if you need a refresher on what adjectives are and how to use them.
Directions
Open this document: The Black Crayon.
Read the passage.
Find the adjectives (you may underline, circle, or highlight them).
Tips
To find the adjective, look for the noun (a person, place, or thing).
There are 6 adjectives. Try to find them all.
If you are unsure whether a word is an adjective or not, try substituting it for an adjective that you know to help you. For example: "I don't want to be in third place anymore" and "I don't want to be in last place anymore." Last makes sense, so third is also an adjective.
Remember, nouns that are capitalized are proper nouns, not adjectives.
5-Minute Brain Break
Don't forget to take breaks in between work! It is important to get a breather while learning so our brain can continue to learn hard things for us.
Please refer to my 5-Minute Brain Break Ideas blog post if you are stuck on what to do.
Creative Writing
For Creative Writing, it is broken down into two parts and to be completed over the span of two days - Thursday and Friday. Your child should work on Part 1 today, then Part 2 tomorrow. It should take around 20 - 30 minutes in total to complete (10 - 15 minutes on Thursday and 10 - 15 minutes on Friday). I will try to give at least two options for Creative Writing. Your child can choose either - or both! - options.
Option 1
Pretend you're a crayon. What would you write to Duncan?
Part 1: Choose a crayon you would like to be, then brainstorm of some things that you can write to Duncan.
Part 2: Write a letter or postcard to Duncan.
Tips:
Brainstorm some things that you can draw with your crayon.
Think about how you would feel if Duncan only used you to draw the things you listed. Write them down.
Adaptation: Instead of using a crayon, you can use any coloured writing tool (e.g. pen, pencil crayon, marker, etc.)
Extension: Include a picture you drew using your crayon.
Option 2
Write a letter to someone (you don't have to mail it).
Part 1: Choose a person to write a letter to and brainstorm what you will write.
Part 2: Write your letter.
Tips:
Brainstorm some things about yourself and some questions you'd like to ask the person who is receiving your letter.
Make sure to use adjectives so your letter will be more interesting.
Adaptation: Have a family member help you write the letter as you say it.
Extension: Include a picture you drew using your crayon.
Message from Ms. Zhu
Don't forget to upload a picture of your child's work or of your child working on their e-Portfolios on Portal. Thank you.
