How do I use "Action" as a Hook?

Look at the picture above and think about how you can paint a dynamic picture in the reader's mind. When using "Action" as a writing hook, remember these three things:

  1. Start in the middle of the action For example: The spy quickly typed in the password to hack into the system. versus The spy received a call that told him what the password was.

  2. Use interesting verbs (action words) For example: I ran versus I bolted I charged I scurried

  3. Describe, describe, describe! Uses your senses to describe the scene: What can you see? What can you hear? Smell? Touch? Taste?

Directions

  1. Look at the picture and use "Action" as a writing hook.

  2. Finish writing the rest of your short story based on the picture.

  3. Re-read your writing to edit it.

  4. Find a word or a phrase that you are really proud of and underline it.

  5. Check that you have spelled correctly the words you know.

  6. Check that you have taken a risk with unknown words and used them too.

  7. Upload a picture of your writing on your e-Portfolio.

My Example

I used this picture to write my hook and paragraph:

(Picture source: Once Upon a Picture)

I followed the directions above and underlined the words and phrases that I thought were powerful and creative.

The transparent creature leapt awkwardly out of grandmother's house because of its long limbs, and started to bolt towards the open field leading to the dense forest. "Hey!" my sister shouted as she quickly grabbed my hand and charged after it with me in tow. "Do you know where our grandmother is?" I bellowed. The creature halted for a split second and spun its head around, as if gesturing and encouraging us to follow after it. We took this as a sign that it knew where our grandmother was and continued to pursue it.
