Week 3: Thursday

Today, we will be working on:

  1. Daily Edit (5~10 minutes)

  2. 5-Minute Brain Break

  3. Creative Writing Part 1 (10~15 minutes)

Today will be the last day of Daily Edit for this week. It will begin again next week with a new book.

Daily Edit

Directions

  1. Download these two documents: Week 3 Thursday Passage A & B (Teacher-Parent Copy) and Week 3 Thursday Passage B (Student Worksheet).

  2. Give Passage B to your child.

  3. Read Passage A aloud to your child (do not let them see it) while they follow along with Passage B.

  4. Read Passage B aloud to your child (have them follow with their finger, if needed).

  5. Read Passage A aloud to your child again while your child follows Passage B.

  6. Give your child time to edit Passage B with a pencil or a marker. * Note: If you are unable to print this out, you child can orally edit the passage instead.

  7. Review their edits and provide hints to help them finish it (e.g. What needs to be capitalized? What is at the end of a sentence? The vowel is saying its name, which means that there is a silent _?_ at the end of the word).

  8. Show your child Passage A and have them compare to see how they did.

5-Minute Brain Break

Don't forget to take breaks in between work! It is important to get a breather while learning so our brain can continue to learn hard things for us.

Please refer to my 5-Minute Brain Break Ideas blog post if you are stuck on what to do.

Creative Writing

For Creative Writing, it is broken down into two parts and to be completed over the span of two days - Thursday and Friday. Your child should work on Part 1 today, then Part 2 tomorrow. It should take around 20 - 30 minutes in total to complete (10 - 15 minutes on Thursday and 10 - 15 minutes on Friday). I will try to give at least two options for Creative Writing. Your child can choose either - or both! - options.

Option 1

Build a bug using recycled products around the house.

  • Part 1: Build a bug using things you can reuse and recycle around your house.

  • Part 2: Write or talk about your bug.

Tips:

  • Look up pictures of real bugs and try to add some of their features into your bug.

  • Look in your recycling bin. What can you use? Make sure you clean them before you use it!

  • Examples of recycled materials you can use: cardboard boxes, string/yarn, empty toilet paper rolls, empty tissue boxes, etc.

  • Adaptation: Draw a picture of your bug instead of building it.

  • Adaptation: Create the bug with your child.

  • Extension: Make a home for your bug.

Option 2

Go on a Nature Walk.

  • Part 1: While practicing safe distancing, go on a walk outside or in the yard with a parent/guardian.

  • Part 2: Write or talk about your walk.

Message from Ms. Zhu

More information will be given to help your child with Part 2 tomorrow. Don't forget to upload a picture of your child's work or of your child working on their e-Portfolios on Portal. Thank you and have a wonderful weekend!
